Legion Programs for Seniors
Promote Independance

Dominion Command, Ottawa: The Royal Canadian Legion's commitment to seniors dates back more than 50 years to when branches first got involved in building low rent apartment units for elderly veterans, widows and their dependents. Today, most branches conduct seniors' programs or provide services focussed on health care, home support and housing. At the national level there is advocacy for seniors' rights and their well being (See bottom of page for web site). As well, support is given to the work of other organizations such as Alzheimer's Canada. The Legion spends approximately $2 million and contributes 447,000 volunteer hours annually to help thousands of seniors across the nation.

Health

To meet the growing need for professional training in gerontology, the Legion provides fellowships to doctors, nurses, physiotherapists and occupational therapists who wish to pursue post graduate study in the field.

Home Support

Dedicated to the principles of dignity and independent living for seniors, the Legion and its branches support a number of community services. These include transport, vehicles for the disabled, visits, foot care clinics, meals on wheels, telephone assurance, home maintenance, diners' clubs and meeting facilities.

Housing

The Legion is committed to providing acceptable and affordable housing for seniors and veterans. More than 100 branches have housing projects on which they spend $150,000 annually. While some projects are for veterans only, most offer accommodation to all seniors. Current housing is valued at $251 million.

Community Service and Resources

The Legion's commitment to seniors is apparent from the number of services and activities sponsored by branches. Health care, recreation and social activities are features of many branches while others offer instruction on matters such as safety, home crime proofing, avoiding fraud and con games and elder abuse.

Dominion Command of the Legion provides resources to help branches and their Ladies Auxiliaries implement and maintain seniors' programs.

The Chairman for Legion Seniors at Rockland & District Branch 554 is Keith Larabie. You can contact him by Email at keithrlarabie at gmail [dot] com or by phone at 613-446-0054
